Walter L. Dumas 71, of 300 Third avenue northwest, died at 4pm Thursday in Hillcrest hospital, Tulsa, where he had been a patient for three days. He suffered a heart attach last fall but had been active in recent weeks. Mr. Dumas operated the Dumas Mfg. Co., which moved recently from the unit block of A northwest to North Main property formerly occupied by Tri-State lumber company. Born June 7, 1897, in the Texarkana area of Bowie county, Tex., Mr. Dumas moved to Miami in 1916. He saw overseas service with the Army in World War I , was an elder of the First Presbyterian church, a member and past commander of the Miami post of the American Legion, and a member of the Miami Lions club. He was one of the key men in developing the Legion's holiday flag service in Miami, a project that has received wide recognition. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maud Dumas of the home; two sons, Robert L. Dumas, Riverside, Calif., and James Walter Dumas, Elkhart, Ind.; a daughter, Mrs. Martha Lou Berkey of Sacramento, Calif.; two half brothers, Ernest Budy, Miami, and Elmer Budy, Mesa, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Military Draft Registration Card and Insurance Form from 1928 state he was born in 1889. This cannot be the case since his mom died in 1887. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Smith Co. TX. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Pulaski County Arkansas with brother Johny Dumas, brother Willie Poston, and Johny's wife Bertel. Dave is shown doing traveling sales and works for a Film Co. William appeared in the census in 1920 in Lonoke County Arkansas. On 14 June 1928 he was a Meat Man for Hotel at Lafayette Hotel in Little Rock, AR, Pulaski Co..¹ He had Social Security Number 464-09-6499. This birthday appears incorrect based on the 1900 and 1910 census, and the fact his mom died in 1887. William died on 14 September 1943 in Ft. Worth, TX. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Ft. 1720 Lincoln Ave. Little Rock, Pulaski Co. AR: Was working at the Layfette Hotel at the time. His father was 65 at time of death and died from a gun shot accident. His mother was 35 and died during child birth. At the beginning of the policy, he had brothers ages 28, 45 and a sister age 45. He was 5 ft 9 in and weighed 157 pounds. He was 38 yr, 5 mo and 9 days old at beginning of insurance policy. The policy also stated that Laura M. was 32.

2. William's Death Certificate states that he was born Jan. 5, 1889. (Note: The 1900 and 1910 Census indicate he was born in 1886. Since his mom died in 1887, this is in error, although he states 1889 in the insurance document, military registration and marriage license.)

3. William stated in the insurance policy that his mother died during child birth. According to the obituary written for the Texas Christian Advocate, September 22, 1887, p. 7, c. 4 , Martha Jane died Aug. 31, 1887 and had been bed ridden for four weeks. This contradicts the statement that Martha died during child birth, that is unless she had another baby that is not listed anywhere.

4. Walter Lee Dumas (stepbrother) in genealogy documentation has written that William was born Jan. 9, 1886. The other birth dates for William and listed above must be wrong because they show him borned approximately two years after his mother died. Parents: A.E.S. DUMAS and Martha Jane GUTHERY.
